A tripwire funnel sells a low-priced offer to new leads right after they opt in, with the goal of turning them into buyers fast. It can work for small businesses, but only if the cheap offer is genuinely useful and you have a clear next product to sell. It's not a shortcut, and results vary a lot by offer, audience and traffic quality.
How a tripwire funnel works
- Lead magnet: A free checklist, guide or mini-class in exchange for an email address.
- Tripwire offer: A low-cost product shown right after signup, such as a template pack or short workshop.
- Core offer: The main product or service you actually want to sell.
- Follow-up: Emails that deliver value and point to the next step.
When it tends to work
- You sell something where trust matters, and a small purchase builds it.
- Your tripwire solves one narrow problem and relates directly to your core offer.
- You have a core offer or upsell, so the first sale isn't the only revenue.
- You're comfortable tracking numbers and adjusting.
When it may not be worth it
- You sell high-touch services where a call matters more than a cheap product.
- You have no time to create a quality low-price product.
- Your margins are so thin that the tripwire can't cover its own ad cost.
- You have no traffic yet. A funnel does not create an audience on its own.
