A funnel is a short path that takes a stranger from "who are you?" to "yes, I'll buy" or "yes, send me more." Setting one up isn't hard, but it has a lot of small parts, and most of the frustration comes from doing them in the wrong order. This page is the overview. It covers what a setup involves, the order that tends to work, and where to go for step-by-step detail on each piece.
If you're new to the ideas behind funnels, Funnel Marketing Basics covers the concepts. This page is about doing the work.
What a funnel setup actually involves
Strip away the jargon and nearly every funnel is made of the same handful of parts:
- An offer. What you're giving or selling, and to whom.
- Pages. Usually an opt-in or sales page, a checkout or form, and a thank-you page.
- Email. A delivery message, a welcome sequence, and follow-ups.
- Payments. Only if you're selling something.
- Tracking. A way to see whether people are arriving, signing up, and buying.
- Legal basics. Privacy policy, terms, and consent wording where they apply.
An all-in-one platform bundles most of these in one login. That's convenient and often cheaper than stitching tools together. The tradeoff is that you depend on one vendor, and each built-in tool may be less deep than a dedicated one. All-in-One Platform Features explains what to look for and what to be skeptical of.
Decide these things before you open the software
The software won't make these decisions for you, and skipping them is the most common reason a funnel stalls halfway through.
- One goal. Pick a single action: join a list, book a call, or buy a product. A funnel that tries to do three things usually does none of them well.
- One audience. Write one sentence describing who this is for and what problem it solves. If you can't, the page copy will be vague too.
- One offer. Know what the person gets, in plain words, and what it costs (if anything).
- Your assets. Gather your logo, a short bio, product files, and any copy you already have. Hunting for these mid-build slows everything down.
A setup order that saves headaches
This sequence works for most small funnels. Adjust it if your situation is unusual.
- Set up the basics. Connect your domain if you have one, set your sender name and email address, and add your branding.
- Build the core pages. Start with the page where people say yes, then the thank-you page. Resist polishing. A plain page that works beats a beautiful one that's half done.
- Write the emails. At minimum, a delivery or confirmation email and a short welcome. Add follow-ups once the basics work.
- Connect payments (if selling). Use a test purchase to confirm the money, receipt, and access all behave as expected.
- Add tracking. Make sure you can see visits and sign-ups before you send traffic.
- Add legal pages. Link them in the footer and near any sign-up form.
- Test like a stranger. Use a different browser and a phone, with an email address you haven't used before.
- Launch small. Send it to a few people first and fix what confuses them.
Only after the simple version works should you add extras like upsells, order bumps, or segmentation. Those are covered in Advanced Funnel Workflows: Upsells, Order Bumps, Segmentation and Automation Rules.
Where to start, based on your goal
| Your situation | Start here | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Brand new to funnels | Build your first sales funnel | Gives you the full path end to end before you specialize. |
| Want to grow an email list | Lead magnet funnel setup | The simplest funnel to build, and a good first project. |
| Selling a course or download | Launch a course or digital product | Involves payments, delivery, and access, so allow more testing time. |
| Pages work, emails don't exist yet | Email automation setup | Welcome, follow-up, and abandoned cart sequences. |
| Almost ready to go live | Pre-launch checklist | Catches payment, tracking, and legal gaps. |
| Already on another tool | Migrate your funnel and list | Plan around your email list and consent records first. |
Honest tradeoffs to expect
- Templates save time but look familiar. They're a fine starting point. Change the copy, images, and headlines so the page sounds like you.
- Automation isn't set-and-forget. Sequences need a read-through every so often, because offers, links, and prices change.
- More steps usually means fewer completions. Every extra page or form field gives people a reason to leave. Add steps only when they earn their place.
- Cheaper isn't always better, and neither is pricier. What matters is whether the plan covers the features you need at the list size you have.
- Results vary. A well-built funnel gives you a fair chance, not a guarantee. Offer, audience, and traffic matter as much as the setup.
Choosing a platform without overpaying
Before you commit, write down the features you need to run your first funnel. That usually means pages, email, payments, and basic reporting. Then compare options against that list rather than against the longest feature list on a pricing page.
For side-by-side thinking, see Funnel Platform Reviews & Comparisons. For what to budget, including costs people tend to forget such as email volume, payment processing fees, and add-ons, read Funnel Pricing & Cost. Plans and features change, so always confirm current details on the official site of any platform you're considering, including Funnel Foundry.
Payments, privacy, and legal: a careful note
If you collect emails or take payments, you take on responsibilities. These can include privacy disclosures, consent for marketing email, refund terms, and sales tax or VAT. The rules depend on where you and your customers are. This page can't tell you what applies to you. Talk to a qualified lawyer or accountant for your situation, especially before you sell to customers in other countries. The pre-launch checklist will help you spot what to ask.

The short version
Pick one goal, one audience, and one offer. Build the simplest version, test it as a stranger would, and launch to a small group first. Improve it from there. If you're unsure where to begin, build your first funnel and use the checklist before you go live.
